One TikTok account can hold only one LIVE GMV Max at a time. If your affiliate is already running LIVE ads for another seller through their account, you cannot open a campaign on that same account – and the platform will not tell you why. The option simply will not be available.

This catches out Malaysian shops running affiliate livestreams more than any other technical constraint in TikTok Shop advertising, because nothing in the interface explains it.

What you actually see

You go to shop ads, try to select the creator’s TikTok account, and it is not selectable. Or you complete the setup and nothing runs.

The creator, asked about it, usually has no idea. Many affiliates do not know another seller has opened LIVE GMV Max against their account, because the seller did it from their own side after the account was linked. From the creator’s point of view nothing changed.

So the first diagnostic is not technical. Ask the creator directly whether any other seller is running LIVE ads on their account. If they cannot answer confidently, assume someone is.

The second, larger problem

The constraint is an inconvenience. What sits behind it is a commercial risk that costs shops more money.

LIVE GMV Max is tied to the TikTok account, not to your product. If you activate ads on a creator’s account and that creator sells other brands during the same livestream, your budget is buying viewers for the whole session. Some of those viewers will buy a competitor’s product. You are paying to fill a room where somebody else is also selling.

This is not hypothetical in the Malaysian market, where multi-brand affiliate livestreams are normal and a single host may run several sellers’ products through one session.

So before opening LIVE ads on any creator’s account, establish two things:

Is the yellow basket exclusively yours for that session? If the creator is carrying other sellers’ products in the same live, your ad spend subsidises them.

Is the creator live for your product only, across all their sessions? A creator who runs your products in one session and a competitor’s the next is a weaker proposition for LIVE ads than the raw numbers suggest.

If the answer to either is no, do not open ads on that account. Run the session organically, or find a creator who will commit to exclusivity for the period you are funding.

The workaround

Where the account constraint blocks you and the relationship is otherwise sound, LIVE ads can be run from the phone rather than through the desktop ads manager. It is the practical route around the one-account limit and it is how most of our client livestreams get funded when the account is contested.

It is a workaround, not a fix. The commercial question above still applies – if the creator is selling competitors in the same room, running the ads a different way does not change who your budget is helping.

Set it up in the right order

Most of the pain here comes from doing things in the wrong sequence. The order that works:

Agree exclusivity with the creator first, in writing, for the sessions you intend to fund. Then link the account – shop ads, manage account, link TikTok account, and have the creator scan the QR code. Then confirm the account is actually selectable before you commit budget or schedule the session.

Shops that schedule the livestream first and discover the constraint an hour before going live end up running an unfunded session.

Why this matters more than it looks

LIVE ads behave differently from product ads. Product ads are limited by your creative pool, which is the governing constraint in how GMV Max works generally. LIVE ads are limited by the host, the structure of a session and whether the room fills at the right moment. The creative that works in one is not the creative that works in the other.

That makes the account relationship the central asset in LIVE GMV Max, in a way it is not for product ads. A shop with a large affiliate programme but no exclusive live relationships has creative supply and no livestream capability. Those are different problems and they need different recruitment.

Common questions

Can two sellers run LIVE GMV Max on the same creator account at different times?

One at a time. When the other seller’s campaign is not active, the account becomes available again – but you are relying on their schedule, which is not a basis for planning.

Does linking an account to a seller centre block me by itself?

Linking alone does not necessarily block you. An active LIVE GMV Max opened by that seller does. If you cannot select the account, assume one is running.

Is it worth running the livestream without ads?

Sometimes, particularly with a creator who brings their own audience. Do not expect the reach of a funded session.

We run livestream operations for Malaysian brands, including creator exclusivity and the account setup that funded sessions depend on. Tell us the brand and the goal.
