A livestream with nobody in it cannot sell. Filling the room is a content job done before and during the session, not something the live itself achieves, and the first hour largely determines how much distribution the platform gives you for the rest of it.
Malaysian sellers consistently underinvest here. They plan the session, prepare the products, brief the host – and then go live to an empty room because nothing pointed anyone at it.
How video-to-live works
Short-form video published before and during a session directs viewers into the live. The mechanism is simple and the execution is where it goes wrong.
Before. Video published in the hours ahead of the session, telling people it is happening and why it is worth attending – a specific offer, a product launch, something time-limited. Vague announcements do not fill rooms.
During. Video published while live pulls viewers in from the feed throughout the session. This is the part most sellers skip, and it is where a large share of live viewers actually come from.
The first hour matters most
Early performance shapes how much the platform shows the session. A room that fills in the opening minutes gets more distribution; one that starts empty struggles to recover within the same session.
That is why the opening is worth concentrating effort and budget on. A modest delivery-weighted push in the first hour can change the shape of the whole session – with one condition attached.
The host has to hold the people it brings. If viewers arrive and leave immediately, you have paid to fill a room that empties, and you have taught the platform the session is not worth distributing. The structure of the session determines whether that happens, and no amount of traffic compensates for a host who cannot convert a room.
Get the session right before spending money filling it.
What actually raises attendance
A reason to attend at a specific time. A flash offer, a launch, limited stock. “We are live at 8pm” is not a reason.
Consistency. Audiences learn a schedule. Sessions at unpredictable times start cold every week.
Video during the session, not only before it. The most underused lever available.
Affiliates posting into the same window. Creators publishing video pointing at your live multiply reach at no additional cost.
What to be sceptical about
Running reach or engagement campaigns in the belief they fill livestreams is common advice in Malaysian seller groups and it does not hold up well. Consideration campaigns lift impressions and little else. They rarely lift the numbers that matter for a live – people entering the room and tapping the basket. Those are driven by the session itself.
If you want to test it, test it properly: same product, same time slot, one variable.
Funding the session
Live advertising behaves differently from product advertising and carries a constraint that catches out shops running affiliate livestreams – one account can hold only one live shopping campaign at a time, and there are commercial questions about exclusivity that matter more than the technical limit. Read funding a live session before you commit budget to a creator’s account.
Common questions
How long before the session should I post?
Same day. Announcements too far ahead are forgotten.
How many videos during a session?
Several, spread across it. One at the start is not enough.
Can a livestream work with no promotion at all?
With an established audience and a consistent schedule, sometimes. For a new shop, no.
