What a TikTok Shop affiliate actually is
In short: you promote a seller’s products in videos, on LIVE, or through links, and every time someone buys through your promotion, you earn a commission, a percentage of the sale price that the seller sets. You don’t hold stock, ship anything, or handle customers. Your one job is to make people buy.
That’s what makes it attractive for beginners: low cost, low risk. But it’s also why it’s competitive: anyone can register, so the people who actually earn are the ones who do the work properly.
Requirements to become an affiliate in Malaysia
According to TikTok Shop’s official creator guidance, you’ll need:
- To be 18 or older.
- An active TikTok account that meets the follower requirement for the access level you want (see below).
- To pass TikTok’s identity and age verification this is required before you can browse the product marketplace or withdraw commission.
- A bank account to receive your payouts.
On follower counts: this is where people get confused, and the Indonesian guides contradict each other. The honest answer is that TikTok sets a minimum follower count to become a full Affiliate Creator, and it differs by market: TikTok’s official guidance lists 1,000 followers in the US and 600 in the Philippines, for example. Smaller accounts can usually still start at a link-share / showcase level with a lower barrier. Because the exact Malaysian threshold can change, confirm your current eligibility in TikTok Studio → Monetization → TikTok Shop for Creator, which is the real source of truth.
Step by step: how to register
- In the TikTok app, go to TikTok Studio → Monetization → TikTok Shop for Creator → Join now.
- Complete identity and age verification. TikTok requires this before you can access the product marketplace or withdraw earnings, and the name you verify must match your payout account.
- Link your bank account for payouts.
- Once approved, open the product marketplace / Affiliate Center to find products to promote.
- Choose products, grab the links or request samples (if offered), and start creating.
Two things to expect: if the option doesn’t appear yet, it’s usually an eligibility requirement not met: keep creating and check again. And new creators typically go through a short pilot period with some posting limits before full access opens up.
3 ways to promote and earn commission
You’re not limited to one method. The three main ones:
- Short videos feature a tagged product in a video. The most durable route, because one good video can keep driving sales for months.
- LIVE sell in real time, answer questions, demo products. This is where a lot of buying decisions get made, but it rewards consistency (not one nervous attempt and then quitting).
- Product / showcase link sharing share product links via your bio, messages, or a showcase on your profile. You can earn commission without making videos the link-share level is also how smaller accounts start.
Once you qualify as an Affiliate Creator, you can also request free samples from sellers to feature: a useful way to try products before you promote them.
How commission and payouts actually work
This is the part almost every guide skips, so pay attention:
- The seller sets the commission rate, not you. Each product has its own percentage. Per TikTok’s rules, your commission is calculated as (revenue − refunds) × the rate, so returned orders simply don’t pay.
- It shows as an estimate right after purchase, but it’s only finalised and paid after the order is successfully delivered (around the seller’s settlement cycle) not the instant someone checks out.
- Commission is held while any return or dispute on that order is still open.
- One rule in your favour: if a seller lowers a commission rate, TikTok keeps you on the higher rate for 30 days on products you’ve already been promoting.
So don’t be surprised if the money doesn’t arrive instantly: there’s a built-in delay, and that’s normal.
The insider view: what actually makes an affiliate sell
This is where our perspective differs from the other guides. At MSCM Studios we run affiliate programmes for brands meaning we’re the ones who pick and pay affiliates on a brand’s behalf. So we see from the inside what separates creators who earn consistently from those who don’t:
- Pick products you can genuinely sell, not the highest commission. 20% of a product nobody wants is RM0. Choose products that fit your audience and have real demand.
- Consistency beats going viral. From a brand’s side, we’d back a creator who posts steadily every week over someone who goes viral once and then disappears. That consistency is what makes brands offer higher commissions and free samples.
- Show the product in use, not just looking pretty. A video that shows problem → solution in the first three seconds outsells an “aesthetic” clip.
- Build a track record. Once you have proof you can sell, you become the one in demand. Brands start coming to you, not the other way around.
That’s the difference between “registering as an affiliate” and “becoming an affiliate who gets paid.”
And if you’re a brand or seller reading this thinking, “how do I get a crowd of creators like these selling my products?” That’s called affiliate management, and it’s one of the most underused sales engines on TikTok Shop in Malaysia.
