If you run a brand on TikTok Shop Malaysia, free samples are how you get affiliate creators to try your product and post about it. Done right, a handful of samples turns into content you did not have to film and sales you did not have to chase. Done wrong, you ship out box after box, pay the courier each time, and get nothing back but a thinner stock count. The difference is not luck. It is screening, settings, and a simple rule for who gets a sample and who does not.
Screen the creator before you ship, not after
TikTok Shop gives sellers two ways to work with affiliates: Open Collaboration, where any eligible creator can find your product and request a sample, and Target Collaboration, where you invite specific creators. Open Collaboration brings volume. It also brings the sample farmers: accounts that request from everyone, post for no one, and move on.
Before you approve a request, look at three things on the creator’s profile and request page:
- Do they actually post selling content, or just lifestyle clips with no shop links? A creator who has never tagged a product rarely starts with yours.
- Does their audience match your product? A food brand sending to a pure beauty creator is paying to reach the wrong room.
- Have they posted consistently, or did they go quiet three months ago? Momentum matters more than follower count.
You do not need a spreadsheet for this. You need thirty seconds per request and the discipline to reject the ones that do not fit.
Let the Sample Settings page do the first cut for you
TikTok Shop has pulled free-sample controls into one Sample Settings page in Seller Center, and it works for both Open and Target Collaboration. Set it up once and it filters requests before they ever reach you:
- Free Sample Stock: cap how many samples each product can give away. This is your budget line. Decide the number from the maths above, not from optimism.
- SKU-level availability: exclude the SKUs you cannot afford to give or do not want promoted yet, so a request can only come in on the products you actually want pushed.
- Creator Eligibility Criteria: set the minimum bar a creator must clear to request at all. This quietly removes most of the sample farmers without you touching a single request.
- Auto-Approval Settings: only turn this on once your eligibility bar and stock caps are tight. Auto-approval on a loose filter is just faster leaking.
The order matters. Tighten eligibility and stock first, then consider auto-approval. Not the other way round.
Read Sample Score, Product Score and Star Creator together
TikTok has added signals that take the guesswork out of screening, and they are more useful read together than alone.
Sample Score sits in the sample-request manager and predicts whether a given request is likely to turn into good content and sales. Treat it as a tie-breaker: when two creators look similar, let it point you to the one more likely to deliver.
The Star Creator badge marks reliable, quality creators on the Find Creator and Sample Request pages, and you can filter for them in the Affiliate Marketplace. For Target Collaboration, start your invites here.
Product Score is the one most sellers forget, and it is on your side of the table. It is the same score creators see when they decide whether to promote you, built from your customer reviews. A good creator checks it before accepting. If your Product Score is low because of slow dispatch or messy reviews, the best creators quietly skip you no matter how good the sample is. Fixing your listing and your reviews does more for your sample acceptance than offering a higher commission ever will.
That last point is the part no competitor page tells you: the sample gets the creator to look, but your Product Score decides whether they say yes.
Give the creator a reason to post, and a brief to post well
A sample with no brief is a gift. A sample with a short brief is a campaign. When you approve a request, send two or three lines: the one hook that sells this product, the single most common question buyers ask, and the exact shop link to tag. You are not scripting them. You are handing them the angle you already know converts, so their video does too.
Also know who you are sending to. Under the Creator Adjustment Program, some newer creators can start promoting products with limited shop features while they work toward full access. They can be worth a sample early, before everyone else is competing for them, as long as they clear your eligibility bar.
Track what each sample returned
The sellers who waste samples are the ones who never look back. Once a month, check which samples led to a posted video, and which of those videos led to orders. You are looking for a simple split: the creators who posted and sold, and the creators who went silent. Keep sending to the first group. Stop sending to the second, and tighten your eligibility criteria so their type does not reach you again next month.
Over a few cycles this turns your sample budget into a shortlist of creators who actually move your product, which is the whole point.
The short version you can run this week
Set your Free Sample Stock from real unit cost. Raise your Creator Eligibility Criteria until the obvious farmers drop out. Keep auto-approval off until that filter is tight. Use Sample Score and Star Creator to choose between good options, fix your Product Score so good creators accept, and send a two-line brief with every approval. Then review monthly and cut the ones who ghosted.
Thresholds, exact caps and the newest settings can shift, so check the live figures in your TikTok Shop Seller Center before you lock your policy.
