TikTok just updated the ad engine most Malaysian TikTok Shop sellers already rely on.

In its latest product preview, TikTok introduced a new layer on top of GMV Max: GMV Max Pro, a lower-budget “Seller Scale Up” version, campaign health ratings, and auto-generated shoppable creative. These aren’t cosmetic. They change what the machine is optimising for and they’re landing in the exact window that matters most.

What TikTok actually launched

A quick recap for anyone who’s been heads-down: GMV Max is TikTok Shop’s automated ad product. You set a budget and a ROI target, and it decides where your money goes across video, LIVE and product ads. Most of you are already in it, TikTok has been auto-enrolling shops above a daily GMV threshold and reinvesting a slice of your sales back into ads automatically.

The new pieces, from TikTok’s own product preview:

  • GMV Max Pro: the big one. It extends optimisation beyond ad spend to also account for coupons, affiliate costs, and platform commissions. In other words, it’s starting to optimise toward your real margin, not just top-line GMV.
  • Seller Scale Up: a lower-budget version of GMV Max that runs on a seven-day cycle and shifts money between ad spend and coupons toward your ROI goal. A doorway for smaller sellers who found GMV Max’s budget bar too high.
  • Campaign health ratings: Ads Manager now labels your GMV Max campaigns Good, Fair or Poor, with an explanation and what to fix. Less guessing about why a campaign is underdelivering.
  • Creative Excellence: shoppable carousel ads and auto-generated product videos (built with TikTok’s Symphony AI) added into GMV Max, so the system can produce creative, not just place it.

A caveat I’ll be upfront about: TikTok rolls these out by market and by allowlist, so not every feature is live in every Malaysian account yet. Check your own Ads Manager rather than assuming, if you don’t see GMV Max Pro or Seller Scale Up today, it’s a “watch this space,” not a “you’re missing out.”

Why it matters for Malaysian brands right now

Stop optimising to GMV, optimise to contribution margin. GMV Max Pro is TikTok finally building that logic into the tool.

And Seller Scale Up lowers the barrier for the smaller F&B and FMCG brands we see most in Malaysia. tTe ones who were priced out of a meaningful GMV Max budget can now let the system balance spend and coupons on a tighter weekly cycle.

  1. Open Ads Manager and look for GMV Max Pro / Seller Scale Up. If they’re available to you, you want them configured before campaign pricing locks in, not mid-sale.
  2. Feed it accurate cost data. GMV Max Pro is only as smart as the margins you give it. Load your real commission (including the 31 Oct changes for your category), coupon and affiliate costs so it optimises to the right number.
  3. Use the health ratings as a to-do list, not a scoreboard. A “Poor” label with a reason is free diagnostics, act on it the same day rather than letting a weak campaign run through the peak.
  4. Don’t judge it in 48 hours. GMV Max optimises daily and needs a few days to settle. Set your ROI target, give it room, and resist yanking the budget the moment one day looks soft. Starving the learning phase is the most expensive mistake we see.
