In TikTok’s own Q3 2026 Product Preview alongside GMV Max Pro and Seller Scale Up sits something strategically bigger than any of them: Smart+ Search Ads. TikTok is building out search as a place where brands can be found and can advertise. If you’ve only ever thought of TikTok as a scrolling feed, this is worth your attention.
Two shifts are happening at once.
First, people increasingly search on TikTok. A whole generation of Malaysian shoppers now types a product or a problem into TikTok the way they used to type it into Google: “snack viral,” “serum jerawat,” “baju raya 2026.” Where there’s search intent, TikTok is building ad surfaces to meet it.
Second, Smart+ is TikTok’s automated, AI-driven campaign type: you give it the inputs and goals, and the system handles targeting, bidding and delivery. Smart+ Search Ads point that automation at search queries: showing your product to someone at the moment they’re actively looking for something like it, rather than hoping to interrupt them mid-scroll.
I want to be careful here, because precision matters more than hype: I’m describing this from TikTok’s own product preview, and exactly how Smart+ Search Ads are configured and whether the full feature is switched on in your Malaysian Ads Manager yet is something you should confirm in your own account. TikTok rolls these out market by market and account by account. Treat this as “check whether it’s live for you,” not “it’s definitely there.”
Why it matters for Malaysian brands
Here’s the part that should make you sit up. Almost every MY seller I meet spends 100% of their ad budget on bottom-of-funnel Shop ads ( GMV Max, Sales campaigns ) all of it chasing the feed. That means you’re renting discovery demand and nothing else.
Search is a different, warmer kind of demand. Someone searching has already decided they want the thing, they’re choosing who to buy it from. Capturing that intent is usually cheaper per conversion than interrupting a cold scroller, and it catches the exact buyers your feed content has already warmed up. Your creators and videos create the curiosity; a week later that person searches your category and right now, if you’re not there, a competitor is.
For discovery-bought categories eg. F&B, FMCG, beauty this is a compounding advantage. The feed builds the demand; search harvests it. Running only one half of that is leaving money on the table, and the brands that wire up both early will own the search results in their category before everyone else piles in. New ad surfaces are always cheapest when few sellers are using them.
Setup TikTok Search Ads
- Open your Ads Manager and look. See whether Smart+ and any search-based campaign type are available on your account. If they are, start small and controlled. A separate, modest budget, ring-fenced from your GMV Max spend so you can actually read the result.
- Fix your listings first: search rewards the found-able. A search ad sends traffic to your product page. If the title doesn’t contain the words people type (in Malay and English), and the page doesn’t convert, you’ll pay for clicks that bounce. Front-load your titles with real search terms, and use Trending Keywords in Sales Accelerator to find them. Search ads and good listings are the same project.
- Think in intent, not just reach. Map the handful of queries a ready-to-buy customer in your category would actually type, and make sure your best-converting, best-reviewed SKU is what they land on.
- Measure it on its own terms. Don’t judge a search campaign by the same-day ROAS you expect from a retargeting ad. Watch cost-per-conversion and whether your overall blended acquisition cost drops as search starts catching the demand your feed creates.
