First, the three traits that make a product move on TikTok
TikTok isn’t a search marketplace where people arrive knowing what they want. It’s a discovery feed. A product has to earn the sale inside a 20-second video from a standing start. In our experience three traits do most of the heavy lifting:
- Demoable. Can you show the result in a few seconds? A cleaning spray that lifts a stain on camera, a snack someone reacts to, a gadget that does one satisfying thing. If the benefit is invisible or abstract, content will struggle and content is the engine.
- Impulse-priced. The easiest sales happen where a buyer doesn’t need to think. There’s no universal number, but low-to-mid ticket items that feel like a “why not” convert fastest from a feed. Higher-ticket products can absolutely work. They just need more trust, more content, and usually LIVE or creators to carry them.
- Repeat-purchase. This is the one most sellers ignore. A product someone buys once a month (food, supplements, consumables, beauty refills) compounds. Your ad and content spend buys a customer once and the reorders are close to free. One-and-done products make you re-buy every customer forever.
This is why food and FMCG is the specialisation we lean on hardest in Malaysia: it hits all three. It demos (taste, reaction), it’s impulse-priced, and people reorder. If you’re choosing between two products and one is consumable, that’s usually your answer.
Before anything else: is it even allowed to sell here?
Certain categories are prohibited or need extra approval and documentation, and the rules are enforced harder in the categories that dominate the Malaysian market: food and beverage, beauty, supplements, mother-and-baby, and electronics. Health and efficacy claims (whitening, slimming, “cures,” before-and-after) are a common trip-wire. For anything consumable or applied to the body, Malaysian buyers increasingly expect halal clarity, and the relevant approvals and documentation sit behind the category rules.
Check the current prohibited product list and restricted product list and the category requirements inside your TikTok Shop Seller Center before you commit, because these lists change and differ by market.
Validate demand before you commit money
“Best-selling” on a listicle means it sold for someone, at some point. It tells you nothing about whether the category is already saturated or whether demand is still open for a new entrant. Validate with signals you can actually read:
- Sales Accelerator → Trending Keywords. TikTok now surfaces in-app demand signals and product recommendations in Seller Center. Trending Keywords is a live read on what Malaysian buyers are actually searching and reacting to. Use it to pressure-test a product idea and to write titles buyers are already typing.
- Product Score. If you’re deciding between products you already stock, the Product Score in Sales Accelerator (the same review-based score creators see) tells you which SKUs creators are most likely to pick up and which have review problems dragging them down. Push the ones that score well.
- Eyeball the content, not just the product. Search the product on TikTok. Are creators making videos that get views, or is it a wall of identical dropshipper clips? If the angle is already exhausted, you’re buying into a price war.
Do the margin maths: pick on profit, not vibes
A product that sells and loses money is worse than one that never sold. Before you list anything, price backward from the margin you want and subtract every real cost TikTok Shop Malaysia charges in 2026:
- A transaction fee of 3.78% (SST included) on most orders, and 4.86% (SST included) on TikTok PayLater orders from 16 October 2026.
- Category commission, which is set per category: check the current rate for your category in the Seller Center fee schedule rather than assuming one number.
- Ad cost, including the GMV Max auto-reinvestment that now converts a slice of your GMV into ads automatically (around 5% for most sellers, 3% for electronics). That’s a real line in your margin, not a freebie.
- Fulfilment and shipping, now that the buyer shipping-fee subsidy has reverted to the standard rate card.
Low-ticket products get murdered here, because flat per-order costs eat a huge share of a cheap item. If a product only works at RM15, the fees don’t care, they take the same bite as they would at RM80. The fix is usually to raise the basket: bundle, add variants, sell the multipack. Choose products that can carry an AOV, or that naturally bundle, over single cheap SKUs.
Match the product to the engine you’ll actually run
What you can sell depends on how you’ll sell it. Be honest about which of the four engines ( content, creators/affiliates, LIVE, ads ) you can run, and pick products that fit:
- Creator/affiliate-led? Choose products you can afford to sample and that photograph and demo well. Creators pick products by score, angle, and whether the sample arrives fast and good, not just commission.
- LIVE-led? Choose demoable, bundleable, impulse items with enough variants to keep a session moving such as food, beauty, household.
- Ads-led from day one? You need margin headroom to feed GMV Max and a product that converts cold feed traffic, which pushes you back toward demoable and impulse-priced.
The three traps to avoid
- Chasing the saturated viral SKU. By the time it’s on a “top products” list, the margin is gone and the feed is flooded. Being early to the next one beats being late to the last one.
- Low-ticket margin-killers. If per-order fees eat the profit, no amount of volume fixes it. Raise the basket or pick a different product.
- Products you can’t fulfil fast. A product with a slow or unreliable supplier will spike your Late Dispatch Rate and Seller-Fault Cancellation Rate and TikTok Shop tightened enforcement on seller-fault cancellations (the ≥10% threshold) from 15 October 2026. Great product, broken logistics, dead shop. Fulfilment is part of the product decision, not an afterthought.
